About the shop

Two brothers. Three generations. One shop.

Burbank Plating Service was founded in 1965 in the San Fernando Valley by the Scheer family. In 1985, brothers Andy and Robert Scheer purchased the company from their father and grandfather and have continued to build the same family-run shop into one of the most NADCAP- and ITAR-credentialed metal-finishing operations on the West Coast.

Frequently asked

Six questions, in plain English.

Most calls start with one of these. Take a swing at them before you reach out — and let us know what we missed.

§ 06
Q.01What is the difference between zinc and cadmium plating?

Cadmium offers superior corrosion resistance but costs more. Zinc is economical and adequate for most applications. Cadmium is typically specified for harsh environments such as marine and aerospace use.

Q.02What types of parts can Burbank Plating process?

We specialize in volume barrel plating. Parts must fit in plastic perforated barrels that move through processing tanks via computer-controlled hoists, rotating slowly through the sequence. Larger parts are processed on our hand-rack line.

Q.03How fast can I have my parts plated?

Burbank Plating is known for our ability to help when turnaround time is critical. Rush orders can be returned within 24 hours with an expedite charge.

Q.04What do the different chromate colors mean?

Colors result from chromating after plating. As a rule, the darker the color the more corrosion resistance is added. Ranking from least to most corrosion resistant: White, Blue, Yellow, Black, Olive Drab.

Q.05What is a salt-spray test?

Salt-spray testing places plated parts in a chamber with 5% salt solution at 95°F, with constant atomized spray to accelerate corrosion. Hours-to-failure is the headline measure of finish quality.

Q.06Are there any hidden charges?

There have never been any hidden charges and there never will be. Quoted prices are final.
